THE HOUSTON LOCAL HAD FOUR REPRESENTATIVES ATTEND THE ADVANCED ARBITRATION TRAINING

The U.S. Postal Service had a meeting to inform the public of changes that may be taking place in Houston, Texas.  There were representatives of local Congressmen, local business mailers as well as postal employees present.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss what will take place after the GPO is sold.  Most of the questions concerning the closing of the operations at the GPO were from business mailers.  These mailers were somewhat upset about the changes that may take place.  Remember, these changes are contingent upon the GPO being sold and will be complete approximately two years later.

Retail unit, boxes and caller service will move to the River Oaks Station with the River Oaks being expanded to handle these operations.  The River Oaks carriers will be domiciled at the Sam Houston Carrier Station.  GPO, NDDC and BMEU operations will move to North Houston.  The Postal Service owns the North Houston facility and the surrounding land which gives them the ability to expand.

Presently mail is being dispatched and received at less then full capacity.  In addition automated machines are not in full operation due to low mail volume.  This results in wasted revenue and the Postal Service is determined to save money to keep our business viable.  In the last 10 years there has been a decline in mail volume of 37.7%.  This is causing a large financial loss for the Postal Service and moving the GPO and NDDC to North Houston will save 32 million dollars a year.

Postal management announced that there will be a separate meeting held in the future to handle internal issues concerning employees but a date has not been determined.  The closing of the GPO and NDDC is projected to cause a loss of 335 positions as well as some employee's experiencing a change in job assignments and/or hours.

If you have any comments or suggestions please send them to the following address with a postmark dated no later then August 13, 2010.

Make 2010 the year you start attending local union meetings

In 2009 we experienced changes that have never taken place in the Postal Service.  Some of these changes had negative effects on postal employees.  In 2010, why not make a resolution to attend your local union meetings to get information and become more informed?  If you have questions that have not been answered regarding your job, the union meeting is an opportunity to speak directly with union officials.  Union meetings are held the third Saturday of each month and all members are encouraged to attend.
